Details about Iran in Democracy History

In this book, Gheissari and Nasr propose to use Iran as a way to study the relationship between democracy and the state. However, I found this book most useful for understanding the changing role of the Iranian state during the 20th century. It explores the interest groups that supported the various governments and dynamics during different periods. The book can serve as a more sophisticated political history of Iran for somebody who is already vaguely familiar with the key historical events and figures. This is not a book for beginners.

The book’s theory is not well developed and really only addressed in the introduction. In the introduction, they state that democracy must permeate citizens’ minds before it can change their political system. The suggest that they will focus on the ideology of democracy as a variable in democracy-building. However, there was relatively little discussion of democracy per se as opposed to the state and interest group politics. For example, the authors note whom the middle class and “bazar” supported at certain times. They argue one of the Shah’s major weaknesses was that he focused on winning the support of the middle class, rather than the broader poor. The discussion is extremely useful for understanding the Iranian state and state-society relations, but the book really only focuses on democracy during the Khatami presidency. Even then, it is not clear that people in Iran do not accept democracy, but rather that they viewed the democratic Khatami’s administration as having failed to push reforms. Perhaps the authors could have included a conclusion to tie their theory together for the reader, but as is the book is unconvincing.

I could not have loved it more. Water for Elephants is one of those wonderful novels that has an interesting setting, but it doesn’t let the setting take over the story. It is a novel about the people in that place, and the people of Benzini’s circus took over my mind and stay with me still.

Jacob begins Water for Elephants alone. Orphaned by his immigrant parents, he is weeks away from his Cornell graduation, but he simply cannot return to the life he has known. He jumps aboard a moving train-the train carrying the Benzini circus to its next production. No one on the circus cares that Jacob didn’t finish his final exams. The diploma, he is told, “is just a piece of paper, and nobody here gives a damn about that. You’re on a show now. The rules are different.”

In fact, the circus seems to have no rules at all. Jacob somehow finds other kind souls among the misfits, and these people work together to protect themselves and the animals. The villians-Uncle Al and August-are well described and three-dimensional. You understand why they behave the way they do. These villians are not cookie-cutter images, and their real-world sensibilities make them even more frightening.

This card is fast and so far no problems. Using it in my Canon T1I dSLR camera. When shooting HD movie’s you need to move a lot of data fast to avoid skips and pauses in action. I will never buy another SDHC card that is not Class 6 or above. You will find deals on Class 2 and Class 4 cards… and they may suffice for your needs. But I don’t want to bottleneck my pictures or video because I wanted to save $5 on the card. I also have a 8 gig Class 6 Transcend SDHC card and so far have had no problems.

My 14-year-old daughter is a proclaimed book-hater. However, after being convinced to listen to Artemis Fowl on tape, she is hooked and has even asked us to buy her a copy! If this book can turn on an avowed book-hater, you know it’s good!

I’m impressed with these counters. I’ve had others that aren’t as accurate and the clips weren’t as good. I especially like that it automatically resets the step counter at midnight. Left one in a hotel room, so I had to buy another just like it.

I read. A lot. And I take a book with me pretty much everywhere I go. The Kindle makes this much easier, and I can take SEVERAL books wherever I go! My Kindle has been to the beach, to the mountains, and to the pool. I got a lovely pouch for it on Etsy, so it’s protected from scratches and drops (yeah, it’s been dropped a few times, but no problems).
As long as the wireless is turned off, the battery lasts for weeks. The wireless eats it up faster, but only turn it on to download books.
I suppose this would be better if it had a touch screen, and you didn’t have to scroll with the menu button to highlight or access the dictionary. But if you really want that, get an iPad. If you only want a great reader (book replacement), at a great price, the Kindle is the way to go!

I am the wife and I couldn’t be happier with this item. Assemblage was easy. The ease of cleaning and cleanup are very simple but the results are what matter. The results were fantastic. We had our carpet installed 8 years ago and this was the first cleaning. We also have 3 cats and a Chihuahua indoors. The knap was restored to the carpet. Stains gone. The house smells clean and fresh. The results were instantly visible as a result this was an extremely satisfying experience. Who needs a man when one has a Hoover steamVac. Enjoy!

I researched vaccuums for about 2 hours before deciding on this one. I wanted a bagged vaccuum b/c it seemed that the bagless created more mess when you empty them and a lot of them have expensive HEPA filters to replace. I wanted to spend less than $100 also. I decided to play the odds and get this vaccuum. So far I have only used it once, but it works amazing. It sucks stuff up powerfully on my laminate floors and on my high-pile area rugs. You can even change the level of the vaccuum based on the floor type. When you select high pile, it’s easy to vaccuum flimsy area rugs. I am very VERY happy with my purchase and just hope that it keeps up for the next few years. I definitely recommend this vaccuum. It is lightweight, easy to put together, and overall really easy to use.
